23rd August 2016 Broken Hill – Cobar (Newey Reservoir)

After getting the car sorted yesterday afternoon it was a little late and the weather unpredictable so we spent the night in a cabin in a caravan park.  So now today we are tackling the trip from a different direction through Wilcannia and if the roads are open, following the Darling River up to Bourke, then not sure what will be next, all dependant on the weather.  The roads from Packsaddle to Tibooburra and Tibooburra to Innamincka are closed. So it looks like a 500km detour to tackle Birdsville from the North.  Sun is trying very hard to poke through the clouds so we are hopeful for a nice day.  Just drove into a fog bank that appears to be getting worse, visibility is less than 200 metres and hoping we drive out of this soon.  Morning tea stop at Wilcannia and the local garage has informed us that the road along the Darling River is also closed so it is the long way for us over to Cobar then up to Bourke, Cunnamulla, Eulo, Quilpie, Windorah and then into Birdsville hopefully. Heading to a free camp at Newey Reservoir at Cobar for the night and it is a terrific little spot.  We are protected by a few peppercorn trees and just opposite the reservoir where lots of caravans have pulled in for the night.  Ours is the best spot here and we have managed to have a terrific fire with wood that was left by a previous camper, very thoughtful.
